{gratitude.2012} Simple Pleasures

This post brought to you by Camera+, Instagram, and my trusty iPhone.

This week I…

…tried out a new watering hole, with moderately good cider…

…tried a new recipe (avocado pasta)…

…took a calming walk in the Pioneer Cemetery near my office…

…drank A LOT of tea…

…read like a fiend…

…played with my camera apps at my desk…

…and, the thing I’m most proud of – I developed my first roll of film, from start to finish!

It was very scary and exciting, and a lot of fun. Out of a class of 10 people, several ended up with blank rolls – so I was pretty excited mine came out at all. I’m trying to work up the nerve to shoot another roll and go back into the studio by myself to try it again, without the instructor there reminding me of the steps.

Did I mention I’m taking a film photography class? I am. It’s awesome. Will hopefully be sharing some of my prints, when we get around to making them.

Happy Friday!

{gratitude.2012} Simple Hopes

This month’s gratitude.2012 prompt was to consider what simple hopes I have for myself this year. Aside from the big, lofty goals, what small pleasures do I want to make sure I enjoy in 2012?

Reading. Whether on my lunch break, or with my first cup of coffee on Saturday morning, I want to make sure I always have a book I’m working on. It helps that my office is right next to the library – I love taking my 15 minute break to go pick out a new book. I just finished the His Dark Materials series, now starting on a John Irving novel. I have a long to-read list.

Being a homebody. As I get older, I find I’m happiest lounging at home in pajamas, watching Netflix with my husband. My party days are over, and I’m so ok with that.

More walks in the park, rain be damned. This is Oregon, after all.

Finally, photography. Remembering that taking pictures is one of my favorite things to do, and actually going out and doing it. My self-portrait project will make sure I try something new at least once a week. This is one of the rejects from Week 1, and I kind of love it. Sometimes I need to embrace the mistakes.

So those are some of my simple hopes for 2012. What are yours?

{gratitude.2012} Intro

Oh, what’s that? You thought that after months of not blogging, I would simply introduce my big Self-Portrait Project and call it a night?

Nope. I have another surprise! In addition to taking a self-portrait every week this year, I will also be participating in gratitude.2012, masterminded by Karen Walrond of Chookooloonks. Karen is one of my very favorite photographers, and I’m excited to be taking part in one of her projects.

Every month, Karen will send out a newsletter with photography tips, words of wisdom, and prompts for photographing gratitude. So periodically, I will be sharing the photos I take of things for which I am grateful, posting them on the Flickr pool, and writing about why I’m thankful.

Tonight, it was being able to take a walk to the park, in beautiful Eugene, with my husband.

This time last year, we didn’t know where we would end up. We thought living in the Pacific Northwest was a dream that was years away from coming true. Everything was up in the air and we had no idea when we would be settled. Tonight, we took a walk up the street to Washburn Park, explored the neighborhood a bit while daydreaming about the future, and came back to our house and ordered pizza. So delightfully normal, which is what we’ve been wanting for years.

I think it will be a good year for photography, and gratitude, and growth. Thanks for following along.
